Find Out How You Can Have A Michelangelo Ceiling

Products To Use

Painting an ornate, aluminum ceiling in fine detail is easy because it is painted before it gets fixed to the ceiling. Most aluminum paneling is sold with etch primer already on it so it is immediately ready to paint. You can use one colour over the whole ceiling, you can add just a touch of colour on the moldings or you can can paint every detail in various shades of paint. The patterns in aluminum ceilings are more deeply pressed than other types of ceilings so they create lovely shadows themselves just from electric light or from natural daylight. Accordingly most people use one colour of paint over the whole ceiling. It is strongly recommended that pale shades of paint be used. Darker colours can be appealing in theory but in practice they can often give a heavy oppressive feel to a room. Oil based paints otherwise known as enamel paints, are the best products to use on metal. They give a tough finish which will last a long time. You don't want to re-paint your lovely ceiling at any stage so use good quality paints
In really tough wear and tear areas such as on pub walls or in front of bars it can be a good idea to consider powder coating. This is a high heat treatment which coats the panels on both sides and produces a tougher finish than standard oil paints. There is a limited range of colours used in powder coating but generally there is a colour to suit most tastes. Always consider how you will paint your panels before you order them. If powder coating is your choice then you will need to order your panels minus the etch primer. Powder coating and etch primer are not compatible. Powder coating companies can be located in your Yellow Pages telephone directory. Powder coating would generally be considered excessive on a normal ceiling which is not subject to wear and tear.

Brushes

Brushes with a width of about 2 -3 inches (6 -7 cm) are the largest you should use when painting the base color of your panels. You will need to paint at least two coats. If dark colours are used then you may need a third coat. Choose the best quality brush you can afford so that you are not continually picking off hairs from your beautiful paint job. When painting the fine details you will need much smaller brushes. Use artist brushes, sizes 6 and 4 to start with and progress from there. Always try to be consistent in the way you paint. For example, always paint your leaves with brush strokes in one direction only. Have a small pot of turpentine at hand and also a box of cheap cotton buds. Any paint excesses or errors can be smartly wiped away with a cotton bud which has been moistened with the turps.

How Much Detail to Paint

Remember that the ceiling will always be several feet above your head so exceedingly fine details may not be seen from that distance. It is easy to paint too much detail into ceiling panels. Remember "less is often best". Too many colours can make your ceiling look too "busy". Every so often you should stand back from your work and assess it from several feet away.

After The Ceiling Is Installed

When the ceiling is nailed up you should take a look at the nail heads - if you can find them. Because such small nails are used you may find that they are not visible. If necessary you can paint a tiny amount of paint on the nail heads.

Strawberry and Lavender Gin

Not Just the 3 of Us

We love our picnics in the Not Just The 3 of Us household and I’ve always secretly hankered after something a bit more stylish and sophisticated than our usual plastic picnic set and carrier bag scenario. There is nothing worse than rolling up to the races and sitting next to the family with the full works and not a plastic knife and fork in sight! With our theme being quintessentially British – Strawberry & Lavender Gin , we chose food befitting of our menu. I even my managed to work in a little taster of my home grown Chives.

Strawberry & lavender gin

Ingredients

  • 400ml Gin
  • 250g Strawberries
  • 100g Caster Sugar
  • 1/2 tsp Dried Lavender
  • 1/4 of a Vanilla Pod

Instructions

1. Find yourself a wide rimmed (at least wide enough to get a Strawberry in!) 1 litre or so bottle or jar with a lid.

2. Cut the Strawberries in half and put them in the jar.

3. Cut the 1/4 of a Vanilla Pod in half lengthways and add that to the jar too (not the end of the world if you don't use the Vanilla , this can be left out if preferred).

4. Drop in the sugar and Lavender and top up with the Gin. Give it a stir and put the lid on.

5. Now the wait! Leave it somewhere dark and warmish for two weeks , giving it a little shake every day (don't forget – this helps to dissolve the sugar).

6. Finally , strain it through a sieve , or a coffee filter , or just a piece of kitchen roll and bottle it. Good to go.

About the Basket:

Spoilt for choice with the wonderful selection on offer , I narrowed my selection down by practicality , number of covers and good quality tableware. My choice was the Coast 4 Person Picnic Basket because I loved the nautical style of this hamper and given that we spend a fair amount of time on Cornish beaches , this blue and white stripe fitted the bill perfectly.

The things that I particularly love about this hamper is that the equipment is really smart , the wine glasses are glass and not plastic and the plates are ceramic. Couple this with the smart white handled stainless steel knives and forks and the picnic is looking good.

The glasses are secured individually inside the basket with a strap. Not only does this keep the glasses in place but it also stops them knocking against each other during transit. The plates are also secured with a strap. This leaves ample space inside for some picnic food. Key to a Not Just The 3 of Us successful picnic is condiments and so the addition of a salt and pepper pot was a real draw here.

Chimichurri Chicken Sandwich

Seasons in Colour

Chimichurri chicken sandwich delight , an all time favourite with the family. Well , the grown ups love it and we first got introduced to it at that gorgeous Argentinian restaurant Gaucho in South Ken.
The ingredient that makes the whole dish here is the chimichurri sauce , a pesto-like sauce of Argentinian origin. It's a cold sauce , meaning you don't need to cook it and has very few ingredients.

There are two versions to it - the green one (that Gaucho serves together with its steaks) and which is mainly crushed parsley mixed with oregano and onions in olive oil (never , EVER use vegetable oil); and the red one which has peppers to it and which I'll show you here (but don't tell the kid I put peppers in , because he doesn't like them... *laughing emoji here*).

Strawberry Tarts

I Like Tweet

These sweet treats are ideal for whipping up before a summer picnic , they are beautifully bright , incredibly tasty and easy to eat wherever you are. They are the perfect addition as they’re quick and easy to make , but look effortlessly beautiful as part of a picnic. Pair with raspberry lemonade or a glass of chilled prosecco with a slice of strawberry in if you’re feeling fancy.

Strawberry tarts and picnic basket

Ingredients

For the pastry:
  • 350g plain flour
  • A pinch of salt
  • 125g unsalted butter (flattened out in between two sheets of greaseproof paper to 1cm thick , chilled in the fridge)
  • 125g caster sugar
  • 2 free-range eggs , whole and 1 egg , yolk only
  • 1 egg , yolk only , beaten for egg-wash
For crème pâtissière:
  • 500ml full fat milk
  • 2 vanilla pods , seeds removed and pods retained
  • 6 free-range eggs , yolks only
  • 120g caster sugar
  • 50g plain flour
For the toppings:
  • 400g strawberries (or any other fruit you fancy!)
To serve:
  • 4 tbsp clear apricot jam
  • 50g icing sugar

Instructions

1. For the sweet pastry , preheat the oven to 190C/350F/Gas 5.

2. Lightly grease and flour 12 x 8cm/3¼in loose bottomed tins.

3. Stir the flour and salt together in a large mixing bowl. Add the flattened butter straight from the fridge into the flour and rub in the mixture.

4. Add the sugar , mix together the eggs and egg yolk , and to the mixture. Gently mix with a dough scraper , or spatula , until the dough comes together in a ball.

5. Lightly flour a work surface , tip the pastry ball out onto it , and knead until you have a smooth soft dough. Shape the pastry into a square , to make it easier to roll out.

6. Place the dough the fridge to chill for an hour minimum , preferably overnight.

7. Remove the pastry from the fridge and lightly flour a work surface. Roll out the pastry 2-3mm thick and line the 12 tins , leaving an overhang of pastry. Place some greaseproof paper over the top and fill with baking beans. Rest in the fridge for 30 minutes.

8. Once chilled , place the pastry tart cases on a baking sheet and cook for 15 minutes. Lift out the paper and beans , brush with beaten egg yolk , and place back in the oven for 8 minutes.

9. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 15 minutes. Then trim the edges and lift out onto a cooling rack.

10. For the crème patissière , place the milk , vanilla seeds and pods into a large saucepan and warm though.

11. Place the eggs , sugar and flour in a large mixing bowl and whisk until the colour changes and becomes pale. Gradually add the warm milk and vanilla to the egg mixture , whisk together , then return the mixture to the pan. Cook on a low heat until it the mixture thickens , then pour into a clean bowl. Place a circle of greaseproof paper on the mixture , to stop a skin forming.

12. To make up the fruit tarts , spoon the crème patissière in a piping bag , and pipe into the pastry cases. Top the tarts with the strawberries.

13. Put the apricot jam and 1-2 tablespoons of water in a small sauce pan and warm it through , so it loosens up and becomes more liquid. Lightly brush the fruit to glaze.

14. To serve , place the tarts on a cake stand and dust with icing sugar.

We have a small patio and have a number of the Sol 72 Outdoor pieces to help with storage, the thing I like about this piece, is that it doubles as seating. Big enough to hide some toys or gardening supplies, or even bbq tools to keep them out of the weather. Durable and handy!

I have been looking for ages to find a box big enough to store all my garden cushions. This box is ideal. It was very easy to put together (mostly just slotted) and looks great in my garden. As we are in the middle of a heatwave I am unable to comment on how it can handle the rain and snow, but it looks solid enough.

I ordered this for gardening tools and live in an area with a lot of rain. I am very happy with how watertight it is and how easy it was to put together. The top takes a strong person to snap into place but other than that, this is well worth it. Now that I have been using it for a while I am surprised by how cheap this was. Definitely worth it.

I bought this bench for my utility room. When it arrived there were so many pieces. However, it went together fairly quickly. Pleased with the end result. However, would point out the the storage compartments are very big. You can get two pairs of shoes in each compartment if stacked correctly. No good for tall boots, but I suppose you could take the cushion off and use the top of the bench. In the whole very pleased. Delivery excellent.

I bought a pair of these and when they arrived was initially disappointed. The material is very thin and lightweight and I was reminded of a pedal-bin. However, having put them in place (i.e. so that they are sitting on the floor and being viewed from a little way away rather than very close-up) I decided that they were actually much better than I initially thought. The design is very elegant with a subtle curving taper, they are fully matt, which makes for a classier look (NOT shiny/gloss as stated on the description) and the height (50cm) is perfect to bring plants up to your eye-line. As mentioned, they are VERY light, so a plant of any hight or weight would likely be highly unstable and yop-heavy, but placing rocks or bricks in the base will resolve this. They come with an inner shelf/pot-holder with lift-out handles that retract completely so as not to be visible, which is a clever touch. The only criticism I would make is that this inner pot is 23cm wide but only 19cm deep, whereas most plant pots are deeper than wide. This means that the largest plant pot you could actually use would be a 5litre / 21cm...I suspect I'll end up by not using the lift-out shelf and building up on bricks or polystyrene instead in order to maximise what is otherwise a very large pot.
